Baronial Activities & Groups
We have a variety of regular activities and groups with which you can get involved.
Events / Business Meetings / Martial Activities / Oldenfeld Ensemble /
Arts & Science Nights / Demos / The Company of St. Jude / The Lions of Oldenfeld
Events
Events are public gatherings at a public location (usually a camp ground) and everyone is welcome to attend. Our events are held on the weekends, Friday evening to Sunday morning. We charge a fee to enter our events to cover the cost of renting the facilities.
We host 5 regular events: Lion’s Tourney, Anniversary, Harvest, Panhandle Skirmishes, and Yule. We also occasionally host other events.
Events are attended in “garb” – an outfit similar in look to clothing worn from 600CE to 1600CE – with loaner garb available for those without. This is where we hold competitions, eat together, and just generally hang out. Please visit our Events page for more information.
Business Meetings
The Barony gathers for regular business meetings. We discuss upcoming activities, events, volunteering, and governance. Meetings last between 30 minutes and one hour and are usually followed by dinner at a local restaurant.
Business meetings are on the first and third Thursday of each month, starting at 7 PM. Currently our meetings are being held virtually until further notice. If you are interested in joining the virtual meeting, please visit our Facebook page Oldenfeld Populace or contact the Seneschal for the meeting link.
For further information, please contact Oldenfeld’s Seneschal.
Martial Activities
People in the SCA participate in a number of different martial activities, including armored combat (also called “heavy” or “rattan”), rapier combat, siege weapons, combat archery, target archery, and equestrian activities.
In Oldenfeld, we have active groups who get together regularly to practice Heavy Combat, Rapier Combat, and Target Archery.
Heavy Combat
Heavy fighting requires rigid armor and uses rattan to simulate weapons.
The rattan fighter community practices once a week. They meet at noon on Sunday at Tom Brown Park (on Easterwood Drive).
We welcome one and all to watch and ask questions and perhaps even give it a try!
For more information, please contact our Heavy Weapons Marshal, who can be reached at heavyweapons@oldenfeld.org.
Rapier Combat
Rapier fighting requires armor made of tear-resistant fabric and uses unsharpened metal swords as weapons.
For more information, please contact our Rapier Marshal, Lord Nicolo di Leone, who can be reached at rapier@oldenfeld.org.
Target Archery
Target archery practice is (most) Sundays at 3pm at the home of Master Octavio and Mistress Mairi Ceilidh. This schedule will be interrupted for event related or mundane conflicts, which will be announced in advance. Check the Baronial Calendar for up-to-date schedule, or the Facebook page.
You are encouraged to obtain your own bows and arrows. There is a limited amount of loaner gear, but the attrition rate of arrows makes it cost prohibitive for us to provide them for everyone on a continuing basis.
For more information, please contact our Baronial Ranger, Lord Kolbrandr Haukr, who can be reached at archery@oldenfeld.org. *Please note that Target Archery practice has been suspended until further notice due to COVID-19
Oldenfeld Ensemble
This group is open to anyone in the Barony who would like to sing or play an instrument. Please contact them at ensemble@oldenfeld.org for more information.
Arts & Sciences Nights
Occasionally, we have scheduled A/S nights where we gather to work on joint or individual projects or for a class.
For more information, please contact our Minister of Arts and Sciences, HL Augustine Winter, who can be reached by email at moas@oldenfeld.org.
Demos
As part of our goal to educate the public about pre-17th century history, we offer public demonstrations of our crafts. We have been asked to demo for schools and festivals.
We are willing to come to your location and demonstrate our crafts or our fighting prowess. We will entertain any reasonable request, but our response is limited by the schedules of our members.
Please contact the Seneschal to request a demo.
Company of St. Jude
The Company of St. Jude is a service group based in Oldenfeld. They host a Pas de Arms every Oldenfeld Harvest.
The Lions of Oldenfeld
We are a combat unit, fielding both rattan and rapier fighters, based in the Kingdom of Trimaris, one of the kingdoms in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA).
The Lions…
- hold over 120 combined heavy, and 60 rapier combat authorizations and marshal authorizations.
- have fought in every Gulf Wars since GWII.
- count two royal peers, eight members of the Order of the Chivalry, four members of the Order of the White Scarf, one member of the Order of the Pelican and one member of the Order of the Laurel amongst our own.
For more information, please contact Master Simon Maurus, OP, who can be contacted by email at lions@oldenfeld.org.
